Your switchboard does a job most people never think about. It takes the power coming into your home, splits it across every circuit, and acts as the first line of defence when something goes wrong. Plenty of homes around Geelong, Torquay and the Surf Coast are still running switchboards installed decades ago, long before air conditioning, induction cooktops and electric vehicles were part of everyday life. Here are the signs we look for when deciding whether a board is due for an upgrade.
Ceramic fuses are a giveaway
If you open your switchboard and see a row of ceramic fuses with wire threaded through them, the board is well overdue for attention. Ceramic fuses were standard in their day, but they are slow to react to a fault compared with a modern circuit breaker, and they do nothing to protect people from electric shock. They also invite a bad habit. When a fuse keeps blowing, someone eventually rewires it with heavier wire than it should have, and whatever protection it offered is gone. Older homes across Geelong and the coast still have these boards, often untouched since the house was built.
Frequent tripping and flickering lights
A circuit breaker that trips occasionally is doing its job. Breakers or safety switches that trip week after week are telling you something. It might be a faulty appliance, but it can also mean the circuits are overloaded or the board itself is tired. Flickering or dimming lights, especially when a big appliance kicks in, point in the same direction. These symptoms are worth having investigated properly rather than lived with, because they rarely fix themselves.
A warm board, buzzing or a burning smell
A switchboard should be cool and quiet. If the panel feels warm, if you can hear buzzing or crackling from inside it, or if there is any smell of hot or burning plastic near the board, treat it seriously. These are signs of loose connections or components running hotter than they should, and they are among the more common causes of electrical fires. Turn off what you safely can and call a licensed electrician rather than opening the board to investigate yourself.
Adding big loads like air conditioning or an EV charger
Even a healthy older board can run out of headroom. Air conditioning, pool equipment, electric ovens and EV chargers all place serious demand on a home’s supply, and boards from past decades were never sized with them in mind. If you are planning any of these, have the switchboard assessed at the same time. Upgrading the board as part of the bigger job is far tidier than discovering partway through an installation that it cannot cope.
What an upgrade involves
A switchboard upgrade is more straightforward than most homeowners expect. We assess the existing board and the circuits it feeds, then replace the old fuses and hardware with modern circuit breakers and safety switches on every circuit, so people are protected as well as wiring. Depending on the age of the installation, that can also mean a new enclosure, tidied and re-terminated wiring, and spare capacity for the circuits you will want down the track. The power is off for part of the day while the work happens, and everything is tested before it is handed back.
